Chick uniformity is decided before delivery day and paid for at harvest

Day-old chick quality is usually judged at the hatchery door: body weight, appearance, activity, general condition. That check happens at a single moment, and it says little about why a flock goes on to perform or struggle. The information that actually explains a flock sits along the whole production chain, before that inspection and after it.

At the hatchery, the measure that matters is the 'hatch window': the time between the first chicks breaking out of their shells and the whole batch being ready for delivery. The window matters because it sets uniformity. A batch that hatches close together (under 24-30 hours) arrives at the farm at a similar size, eats and drinks in sync, and grows evenly. A batch spread over a longer window arrives as a mix of bigger and smaller chicks, and the small ones keep losing the daily competition for feeder and drinker space, which worsen uniformity over time.

After delivery, the first week on the farm is where quality becomes measurable, and the suggestion is a standard record for every batch: breeder flock, hatch date, how long the eggs were stored, first-week mortality, seven-day body weight, uniformity, and management notes, logged the same way every time. The discipline matters because week-one deaths alone don't say whose fault a bad batch is. A field study of more than 16,000 broiler flocks tied first-week mortality to breeder flock age, egg storage time, season, bird strain, the hatchery, and the farm itself. One bad batch proves nothing. Ten batches logged the same way show whether the problem tracks the hatchery, the breeder flock, or your own brooding.

My take

The useful tension here is that uniformity is largely set before the chicks reach you, and yet the farm still explains a large share of what happens after placement. Both are true at once. That's exactly why a grower needs a record rather than an opinion.

My rule is to look first at what I can control and assume the problem is mine. It keeps you improving instead of complaining, and most week-one problems really are brooding, feed and water access, or temperature.

But accountability without data only ever points at you. As a contract grower, the integrator sources the chicks and the feed, the two inputs that set your performance ceiling, and your performance numbers are what decide your pay. If a batch arrives with a wide spread and you didn't record it, the story defaults to your management. You can't blame anything other than yourself if you don't have solid data behind the suspicion.

That's what the standard record buys, and it works in both directions. Seven-day weight, first-week mortality, and a uniformity check, measured the same way every cycle, keep you honest about what's yours, help you manage the next flock better, and build the only kind of case an integrator takes seriously. One cycle of notes is a complaint. Ten cycles showing the same pattern tied to the same hatch dates is a negotiation.

Advanced Sensor Technology in Poultry: an early-warning layer, not fewer people

Two emerging sensing tools are being pitched the same way: flag the problem earlier, then send a person to look. The first is multispectral imaging paired with artificial intelligence. Multispectral systems capture selected wavelengths that show differences in pigmentation, tissue composition, moisture and blood-related characteristics, so an area that looks normal can still read as abnormal. On a commercial processing line, one such system sorted systemically diseased birds from wholesome ones with about 96% accuracy. The proposed farm version puts a camera over the flock and compares odd spectral patterns against feed intake, water use, activity, temperature and ventilation, then points a human at the birds worth checking.

The second is ultra-wideband (UWB) radar for litter moisture, still at research stage. Wet litter drives caking, ammonia and contact dermatitis, and moisture varies across a house because of drinker leaks, bird distribution and ventilation, so spot checks miss wet zones forming between inspections. Both write-ups name the same barriers: calibration across litter types and depths, dust and humidity, models trained in research conditions that may not hold on a commercial farm, and cost.

Nobody buys another data stream unless earlier detection cuts labour, improves performance or prevents a bigger loss.

G2O, an aquaculture technology firm with more than 80 installations, is pitching indoor African catfish to poultry integrators as a second protein line built on familiar logic: standardised buildings, formulated feed, predictable cycles and yield per square metre. Its commercial system in Slovenia has run three years and claims about one tonne of fish per square metre of building footprint per year, with electricity under 0.5 kWh per kilogram, though vendor numbers deserve the usual caution.   • DA weighs lower corn tariffs. The Department of Agriculture is considering cutting tariffs on imported corn to head off a supply shortfall driven by rising production costs and weather risk, and local corn farmer groups are warning the move would cut their incomes. Corn is a core feed ingredient and feed is the biggest line in broiler production cost, so where this lands reaches every grower eventually. Read more

  • Philippine poultry output hit 3.2 million tonnes. Philippine poultry production reached 3.2 million tonnes in 2025, up more than 9% year on year, according to figures presented at the Philippine Poultry Show and Ildex Philippines in July. The show itself drew 173 exhibiting companies from 22 countries, with feed ingredients and additives the largest exhibitor category. Read more

  • Import ban on 23 countries over FMD. The Department of Agriculture has banned imports of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) susceptible animals, meat and by-products from 23 countries after outbreak reports, covering parts of Africa plus Cambodia, Jordan, Malaysia and Vietnam.
